We love this verse for Christmas cards and inspirational candles. But in its original setting, this isn't a cozy sentiment about a nightlight in a nursery. It's a cosmic declaration of war against despair.

John opens his Gospel by deliberately echoing the very first words of Genesis. Just as God spoke light into a formless void, He is now speaking the Word—Jesus—into a spiritual one. The Greek verb translated "overcome" also carries the sense of "understand" or "grasp." Darkness didn't just fail to defeat the light; it couldn't even wrap its head around it.

This isn't a promise that the darkness disappears immediately. It's a promise that darkness is already a defeated force. Even when the night feels long, it cannot swallow the light of Christ. If you have that light, you have the victory, even while you're still standing in the middle of a long night.
